The Advocacy Project

The Advocacy Project is all about support adults with learning disabilities to achieve a better quality of life.

When Adults with learning disabilities feel that their views aren't being heard the Advocacy Project will support them to speak up for themselves or speak for them on their behalf.

The Advocacy Project supports people on a one-to-one basis, facilitates groups promoting self advocacy and also works with BME communities to support them in accessing services.

The Advocacy Project can support adults with learning disabilities with many things, including:

  • Benefits advice
  • Complaints
  • Filling out forms
  • Help talking to people from Social Services, Health Authorities and the Education Department
  • We will support people to represent themselves to Authorities
  • Drop in for parents with learning disabilities with support from Advocacy, The Learning Disability Community Team and The Portage Service.

The Advocacy Project has established self advocacy groups within the city:

The Network Team speaks up on all issues they feel strongly about, from transport to health.

The Feel Safe Group – Bullying is a big issue amongst people with learning disabilities. It gives people a chance to talk about their experiences and work to make people feel safe.

The Zoom In Group has launched a website for people with disabilities in Peterborough: www.webjam.com/zoominpeterborough

The Friday Social Group gets people together to try out new things and days out.
