What are Compacts?

Compacts across England are helping the local public sector and voluntary and community organisations get on together, work to common aims and deliver quality services to individuals living in their neighbourhoods and communities.

"The first key strength of a local Compact is that it ensures the voluntary and community sector knows what is going on locally. It gives the sector a voice to be able to inform and shape the decisions the public sector makes."

The strength of both large and small voluntary and community organisations are that they work with, and know very well, the individuals and communities living in their wards and neighbourhoods.

A strong Compact ensures regular communication between the sectors that focus on what communities want and clear consultation with the voluntary and community sector at every stage of decision making about how local partners deliver services. Of course, voluntary and community organisations are also often best placed to deliver these services and, through the use of the Compact, should be actively supported to do so through a recognition of the true cost of providing those services, secure longer-term funding and sufficient notice when contracts end.

Government Offices promote and support local Compact development. They have a key role in scrutinising and challenging Local Area Agreements to ensure they adequately involve the sector as policy and delivery partners.

Peterborough Compact

The Peterborough Compact was first published in October 2005; this document has been reviewed and re-published in February 2007. Three Codes of Good Practice have been compiled and approved with two remaining to be drafted.

The ethos of Compact is simple - Working together – Better understanding – Better communication – Better partnership – Better together.

If you would like further information or to be more involved with the Compact to implement and take it forward, please contact John at PCVS on 342683 to get involved now!
