Stepping Toward Work

drawingpinStepping towards Work is a project to support people who are living with HIV and who are unemployed and wish to move towards employment.

The project operates throughout Cambridgeshire and is managed by the two local HIV and Sexual Health Charities: PHSS and DHIVERSE.

Not everyone who is living with HIV may want, or feel able to launch themselves directly back into the workplace, and the project recognises that volunteering is an incredibly important way in which members of the project can build up their skills, confidence, social networks and overcome fears of stigma and exclusion. Volunteering can help them to make informed decisions about engaging with work at their own pace.

Many people who are living with HIV have benefited from support through a range of voluntary organisations, and are keen to give something back. Many have experienced discrimination and exclusion through their HIV status, sexual identity or ethnicity (and how these different forms of discrimination interact with each other) and are well placed to understand some of the issues which are involved, and support others who are similarly effected. People living with HIV are a tremendous potential asset for local volunteering and community activities and we hope that Stepping toward Work can bring some of their enthusiasm and skills into the network of local volunteering.

HIV and volunteering, which will assist local voluntary organisations in understanding some of the issues which might affect people living with HIV in a volunteering setting, will cover basic issues of:

:: HIV transmission
:: Stigma and confidentiality
:: Policies and Employment
