Peterborough Litter Wombles was founded in 2021 by a group of Keep Britain Tidy’s Litter Hero Ambassadors with the aim of Cleaning Up Peterborough. We became a constituted Association in 2023.
We collected over 5,000 bags of litter last year, bringing the total since our inception to more than 14,000 bags. We also clear heavier, fly-tipped items such as furniture, DIY waste, carpets, abandoned tents, tyres, car parts, and shopping trolleys. By weight, these items match the volume of the bags we collect, accounting for approximately 1,000 unreported fly-tips annually.
Last year PLW volunteers participated in over 100 litter picks across various locations in Peterborough, including Millfield, Lincoln Road, Walton, Maskew Avenue, Bretton, Dogsthorpe, Orton Waterville, Longueville, Hampton, Ravensthorpe, Parnwell, Boongate, Embankment, and Potters Way. Some highlights from our recent activities include:
We hold regular weekly litter picks every Sunday morning from 10 to 12. The locations are shown on our website at https://www.peterboroughwombles.com/events and on our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/peterboroughlitterwombles.
We run Corporate Social Responsibility litter picks for local businesses, where we provide equipment, find suitable locations, lead the litter picks and arrange for bags and any larger items to be collected by the Council. Last year we organised 22 litter picks for 15 different companies.
In our ongoing commitment to reducing the amount of litter in our city, we maintain lamp post bags along paths and cycleways. We are working with the council to increase the number of with more permanent bins and to identify sites for CCTV monitoring.
Please join us! There is plenty of room for both regular and occasional volunteers and every contribution helps! Joining involves one click on Facebook or contacting us via the website.
