Peterborough Celebrates has become something people in the local area really look forward to every year, and this year PCVS were lucky that our friends from the Research and Development team at Peterborough City Hospital were kind enough to invite us to be part of their stall. It was a fantastic opportunity to get out in the community talking to people about all the different ways you can take part in research.

Many thanks to the Research and Development team from Peterborough City Hospital for inviting us to be part of all the fun and excitement, and thanks as well to Gill, Brian, and Toby for volunteering on the day, and to Nene Park Trust for putting on another great festival!

This work isn’t possible without researchers and members of the public coming together for the good of everybody.

Which is where you come in…

As we write this, it’s the 20th of May, which means it’s International Clinical Trials day, held internationally every year to recognise the start of what is now considered to be the first ever randomized clinical trial.

On this day in 1747, James Lind, a ship’s surgeon in the British Royal Navy, conducted a trial with twelve sailors in an attempt to find a treatment for scurvy. Two of those sailors received a treatment made up of citrus fruits, which proved to be immediately effective, and the findings from the study played an important part in our understanding both of scurvy and of how to best conduct health and care research.

This is story you can be a part of! The quickest way to start taking part is to sign up for Be Part of Research, an online platform that connects you with researchers and studies that are of interest to you and your community. That’s just one of the ways to take part; PCVS is always looking to meet new people and connect with new communities. If you are interested in helping make a difference through this work, or if we can support you in any way, please get in touch by emailing co*********@*****co.uk or calling 01733 342683. Alternatively, we do have regular research drop-in sessions; our next one is on the 27th of May!
